Program Structure

We provide seminars to study the environmental sciences, holistic healing, multimedia and develop your own creative talents.

Our free apprenticeship program provides the opportunity to try small-scale sustainable farming without capital investment, risk, or hidden expenses on a producing farm in a work-study environment. Over the course of the season, which runs from March to December, we will touch upon many topics through discussions and/or hands-on experience. We will encounter many of the topics in the process of operating the farm throughout the year. Often this instruction and discussion will occur in the field as we work.

Questions, discussion, and instruction may also occur at the regular weekly Monday morning planning meeting, during mealtimes, on garden tours, at midweek evening gatherings, and at organized training workshops during the workday. It is important for apprentices to ask about the different topics they are interested in, because as experienced farmers and teachers we want to share what information we have and how we learned it. If we know there is expressed interest in a particular subject, we will discuss it. We will not automatically address subjects for which there seems to be no interest.

Members participate in work shops to advance soft clean technologies. .
Because individuals learn in different ways, our approach combines active participation, experiential learning and creative expression. Here, there is a niche for any committed individual. Be part of positive development!

Participants  have the opportunity to reap the benefits of a community harvest program. Obtaining one’s food through community farming rather than a market requires a different approach and consciousness. Members give input about varieties and quantities to the farmer so that the planting plan can be tuned to the needs of the community. Learning how to utilize food that is local and seasonal can challenge new members because the preparation, preservation, and storage of food that comes straight from the land is much different than deciding on a menu and then shopping for it. Our bi-weekly newsletter offers recipes, suggestions for storing and preparing the food, as well as current news from the farm. CSA cookbooks with recipes for all the different vegetables are also available from the farm.

Study Yoga, Aromatherapy, Herbal Gardening, Seed Banks & Exchanges, Nurseries and Organic Gardens,  The construction and design of 'Micro-Environments' and 'Bio-Spheres', The development and research of Alternative Energy,  and Sustainable Living Projects. We stress grass roots development of soft, clean, technologies. Also to directly influence the renewing of our natural resources. Capital return to the economy is both short and long term, and is sound through resource conservation, vocational development, and public service. Simply, this program is great for the economy and the environment.

All farm personnel share in the day-to-day operation of the farm, which includes animal chores, planting, cultivating, weeding, harvesting, compost-building, participating in meetings, instructing visiting students in farm activities, and performing group cooking and cleaning duties. In addition, apprentices share responsibility for starting seedlings in the glasshouse, crop irrigation, animal care, harvesting of forage crops and grains, and orientation and training of farm stewards (short-term volunteer helpers) and visitors to the farm.

At the beginning of the season, we will discuss with each apprentice their educational goals and create an outline for those goals. We will also delineate the goals: the ones that are likely to be addressed in the course of the farm’s operation during the upcoming season, the ones that are more likely to be addressed in a second year on this farm, and the ones that will probably need to be addressed on a different farm. Each year is unique. The group of apprentices will have various levels of farming experience and knowledge, from none to several seasons’ worth.

We invite you to explore the opportunities! With an active volunteer core group of 10 to 20 members our crew helps organize membership, distribution, communications, website development, member surveys, general meetings, and on-farm work days. The core group also serves as a research and advisory council for farm planning and program development, farmland acquisition and conservation, making business decisions, and fundraising. Members who wish to become more involved in the farm and take on a more committed or particular role in the farm are encouraged to join.
